‘Simple Input’ is a simple software application for reading weight measurement values from electronic balances through the serial port, and inputting the values to Microsoft Excel.
- Operating Environment
Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7
Microsoft Excel 2000 or later
- Installation
1) Open Setup.exe
2) The setup screen will appear. Please follow the instructions given on the screen to begin installation.
3) When installation is complete, [Simple Input] will appear on the [Start] menu.
* To install or uninstall 'Simple Input' on Windows2000/XP/Vista/7, please make sure to use a login ID within the system administrator group.
Using a login ID with 2-byte characters (Japanese, etc.) may produce errors during the installation process. In case of error, please login with a different user ID, including only 1-byte characters.
- Uninstall
1) Select ‘Add/Remove Program’ from the ‘Control Panel’. Choose ‘Simple Input’.
2) Follow the steps given by the messages of Uninstall program.
- Usage
1) Select Inputting Device
Select and set up the device to be used as an input device. Either an electronic balance or a keyboard can be selected as the input device.
A) When an electronic balance is used as the input device
- Select the maker of the electronic balance from the [Input Device] list.
- Click the Transmission Settings>> button.
- This will display the following items under [Transmission Settings]. Please set them to match the settings of the electronic balance.

(*Notice)
If the actual settings for the electronic balance are different from the settings specified on the [Transmission Settings] screen, the measured data value will not be entered into the system correctly.
B) When a keyboard is used as the input device
- Select ’KEYBOARD’ from the [Input Device] list.
2) Setup operation of cursor
Sets the direction of movement for the input cursor on the Excel spreadsheet after a value is inputted.
Select from [Down], [Right], or [None], which direction to automatically move the cursor.
This setting can be changed during measurement.
- Select a direction from the list under [Move Selection After Enter].
3) Start inputting
- Confirm that the electronic balance is connected properly.
- Open the Excel file to input the data values to, and select a cell to input the first measurement.
- Click the Start button.
This will minimize the screen, and put Simple Input on stand by for receiving measurement data. Selecting ‘KEYBOARD’ on the device selection screen will display the data value entry screen.
- Input data value from the device (selected electronic balance or keyboard)
When using an electronic balance, press the Print key on the balance after each measurement. When using the keyboard, enter the value into the box on the data entry screen, then click on the Enter button.
- The measurement value will be inputted into the active cell in the Excel file.
(*Notice)
* If more than one Excel file is open, measurements will be inputted to the first file that was opened.
* If Excel is not running at the time of measurement, a new Excel file will open and the data will be inputted.
4) Stop inputting
A) When an electronic balance is used as the input device
- Click on [Simple Input] on the taskbar to return it to its original size.
- Click the Stop button.
For measurements done with an electronic balance, a log file (SimpleInput.log) will be created in the folder that the Simple Input application has been installed to. The measurement log file will be deleted every time ‘Simple Input’ is executed and the new log file will be created.
B) When a keyboard is used as the input device
- Click the Back button.
5) Exit application
- Click the close button (X) on the top right corner of the Simple Input screen.
- User Registration
This product has a limited trial period. The trial period expires 30 days after the program is first installed. After 30 days has passed, if you are interested in continued use of Simple Input, please purchase an ‘Executive access key’. After obtaining an Executive access key, follow the steps below to make the computer able to detect the Executive access key.
- 1) Install the file from the application CD by running the “Install.bat” file under the DRIVER folder.
- 2) Insert the Executive access key into the USB port of the computer.
Following these steps will allow the computer to recognize the Executive access key, so in the future, to use Simple Input, just insert the Executive access key and run the program.
(*Notice)
If a trial expiration date continues to display, irrespective of the Executive access key is connected, there is the possibility that it is not being detected correctly. In that case, please reinstall the driver file from the application CD by running the “Install.bat” file under the DRIVER folder.
To uninstall the Executive access key driver, run the “UnInstall.bat” file under the DRIVER folder of the CD. Also, Please do not uninstall the driver while Simple Input is running.
