‘Simple Counter’ is a simple program that can be used to count items while making observations.
- Operating Environment
Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7
- Installation
1) Open Setup.exe
2) The setup screen will appear. Please follow the instructions given on the screen to begin installation.
3) When installation is complete, [Simple Counter] will appear on the [Start] menu.
* To install or uninstall Simple Counter on Windows2000/XP/Vista/7, please make sure to use a login ID within the system administrator group.
Using a login ID with 2-byte characters (Japanese, etc.) may produce errors during the installation process. In case of error, please login with a different user ID, including only 1-byte characters.
- Uninstall
1) Select ‘Add/Remove Program’ from the ‘Control Panel’. Choose ‘Simple Counter’.
2) Follow the steps given by the messages of Uninstall program.
- Usage
1) Select Counting Mode
Select a mode from Leukocyte Counter Mode, Cell Proliferation Counter Mode, and Reticulocyte Counter Mode by matching the object you wish to count.
1. Select a mode from the [Mode] menu.
- A) Leukocyte Counter Mode
- The 8 counting items are Eosinophil, Monocyte, Basophil, Lymphocyte, N.stab, N.segment, Other white blood cells, and NRBC.
Default value for maximum count is 100.
If you wish to improve calculation accuracy by averaging 2 countings, check the [with Average] option.
- B) Cell Proliferation Counter Mode
- The 2 counting items are ‘Negative’ and ‘Positive’.
- Default value for maximum count is 1000.
- C) Reticulocyte Counter Mode
- The 2 counting items are ‘Reticulocyte’ and ‘RBC’.
- Default value for maximum count is 300.
- The resulting percentage displayed is calculated as ( Reticulocyte / ( RBC x 9) x 100 ).
Press the [F8] key or choosing [View]-[Change View] from the menu will allow you to change between [Counting Result View(F8)] and [Raw Data View(F8)].
2) Start Counting
- Enter a value into ‘Max Count’.
The users may set the count value on their own, 30000 counts at the maximum.
- Enter a value into ‘Animal No.’
- Click the Start(F5) button or go to the menu and choose [File]-[Start] to begin counting.
3) Counting
- Press the keys corresponding to the characters displayed under each counting item.
(The regular number keys and the keys on the number pad are treated as different characters)
(Example) Leukocyte Counter [Eosin] [T7] -> Number pad [7]
- Every time a key is pressed, ‘Count’ increases by 1.
- When a mistake is made during entry, press the Minus key (-) to change the display to Minus (-), then press the key for the counting item that you wish to decrease. The item will decrease by 1 and the display will automatically return to Plus (+).
4) Stop Counting
When ‘Count’ reaches the ‘Max Count’ value, the counting will end automatically.
For Reticulocyte Counter Mode, counting finishes when the amount of red blood cells (RBC) reaches the maximum count value.
In Leukocyte Counter Mode, if the [with Average] option is checked, after the end of counting, the program will standby for a second counting. If the ‘Max Count’ value or ‘Animal No.’ is changed before the second counting, the next counting will be treated as the first counting.
To stop counting befor reaching the 'Max Count' value, click the Stop button.
5) Print Counting Results
To output counting results, select either the ‘default printer’ or the ‘CSV text file’ output option. CSV files can be edited with various programs, for example, text editors such as ‘Notepad’, word processors such as ‘Word’, or spreadsheet programs such as ‘Excel’.
- When the calculation sequence is finished, click the Print button.
- Enter [PROJ. No.], [User], and [Date].
[PROJ. No.] may be up to 10 characters, and [User] may be up to 12 characters.
- If you wish to output to a CSV file, check the [Output to file] option.
- Click the OK button.
6) Save Measurement Results as a CSV text file
A screen, “Save As” shows up if you check the [Output to file] option on the “Project data entry screen” and click the OK button. [Specify the folder to save the file], Create a new Folder, [Folder Delete], and [Folder Rename] can be done from this screen.
- Specify the folder to save the file
A) Click Create a new Folder. “Folder name entry screen” shows up. Enter a new folder name into the text box and click OK. A new folder is created under the folder you selected.
B) A folder is renamed or deleted if right click on a folder and show right-click menu.
[Folder Delete]: A folder can be deleted only if there is no file in the selected folder (The selected folder does not move to Recycle Bin)
[Folder Rename]: A “Folder name entry screen” shows up to change the folder name. Enter a desired folder name and click OK. The folder name is renamed.
- After OK button is clicked on “Save As” screen, a folder, “Data” is created inside the folder that Simple Counter was installed. “Data.*CSV” (* is a number) is count result file and “Log*.CSV” (* is a number) is count result raw data file.
7) Exit the application
- Click the Exit button or choosing [File]-[Exit] from the menu.
8) Change settings
A) Change the counting items (Leukocyte Counter Mode only)
In Leukocyte Counter Mode, the counting items can be changed before the initial counting begins.
- Click the Set counting Items... button.
- Set the counting keys and the counting items.
- If you wish to keep the settings for the next time program is used, check the [Save Settings] option.
- Click the OK button.
- User Registration
This product has a limited trial period.

(Steps for User Registration)
- 1) Under [Help] on the Simple Counter menu bar, select [Version].
- 2) On the resulting version information screen, enter a User ID into the text box on the bottom left.
- 3) Click the OK button to return to the counting screen.
- 4) Restarting the application will complete User Registration.
